Aklima, 23  Tangail, Bangladesh by Phil Borges

Aklima, 23  Tangail, Bangladesh

As a young girl Aklima met a woman who promised her a job at a beauty salon in a town 300 Km away.  When she arrived she learned that she had been sold to a madam for $170.  As a ‘bonded sex worker’ she was essentially a slave until she made enough money to buy her ‘freedom’.  She told me “By the time we are free from our bondage the community does not accept us and it is impossible to leave and get a normal job.”  Aklima now fights alongside Akhi in their ongoing struggle to achieve their basic human rights.
