Gloria, 24   Suipira, Ecuador by Phil Borges

Gloria, 24   Suipira, Ecuador

Growing up, Gloria observed many problems with Suipira’s water system.  The supply was contaminated and inadequate for the number of residents, which generated conflict in the community.  At 20 Gloria galvanized her neighbors, convincing them to provide labor for a modernized water system.  She generated a budges of$31,000 and presented it to an international development organization, which agreed to donate the necessary materials.  Gloria organized over 70 community work parties to complete the project and today Suipira enjoys a dependable supply of clean water.  Gloria, who has only a 6th grade education, has been elected water system operator and says she enjoys being a community leader.
