Jenise, 37  Kandaya Village, Malawi by Phil Borges

Jenise, 37  Kandaya Village, Malawi

Five years ago Jenise’s family was so poor that at times food was a luxury item.  She decided to join a ‘Village Savings and Loan’ program with 14 other women.  The program’s constitution asked each woman to save 20 cents per week.  As the pot of money grew the women could lend it back to themselves at 10% interest.  Today Jenise’s family not only eats well, but has purchased livestock and land and the materials to build rental houses.  Once other villagers saw her success they asked to form their own groups and the program spread spontaneously.
