Godana, 48 Yabelo, Ethiopia
Historically, key community decisions for the Boran tribe have been made only by men at the Durni Eldelo, an important meeting held every eight years. Godana broke tradition by attending this meeting and speaking about issues relevant to women. She courageously brought up topics that had been neglected, such as reproductive health, family planning, and HIV/AIDS prevention. Today, Godana works as a community educator striving to dispel popular myths, such as “babies come only by God’s will.”
