Homiara, 49  Kabul, Afghanistan by Phil Borges

Homiara, 49  Kabul, Afghanistan

After her husband died during fighting with the Soviets, Homiara fled to Pakistan to secure an education for her daughters.  After the fall of the Taliban, she returned to Kabul to find her home demolished.  To support her daughters’ schooling, she began to raise and sell chickens.  I was impressed by Homiara’s fervent dedication to her daughters’ education; when I asked what she hopes for the future, she said she wants to see her children educated and living a good life.  “I am very hopeful.  Before, women had to hide their faces and could not work.  Now, I feel very positive about the future.”
