Shasha lives in a remote village on the banks of the Amur River, which is frozen nearly nine months of the year. She understands very little of her native Nanai language despited her grandmother's coaching. Her grandmother said Shasha has fainting spells and has heard voices - typical chracteristics of potential shamanic abilities. However, Shasha has little interest in her traditions, and prefers doing math and watching TV with her best friend Lena.
