As a young monk, Thupten began to hear voices. He became sick and disoriented, and thought he was dying. An older monk took him aside and told him he had a gift and could be very useful to the Nechung Monastery. I’ll never forget the day I was invited to watch Thupten go into trance and ‘channel’ the Nechung Oracle, an oracle often consulted by the Dalai Lama on important issues.
