With this Prayer, Shangri La by Lisa Kristine

With this Prayer, Shangri La

A woman gives thanks at the Ganden Monastery. She circles the entire monastery every day, praying. The pilgrims walk clockwise around the path and turn the heavy prayer wheels so that with each revolution, a prayer is “recited.” The larger prayer wheels can hold up to a mile’s worth of prayer handwritten on the rolled scrolls inside. The popular mantra “Om mani padme hum,” “hail to the jewel in the lotus,” is her daily prayer.
