Elephants permeate literature and the visual arts in Thai culture, nearly always portrayed as beneficent and benevolent figures. They also play an economic role and are essential in transporting goods and people.  Moreover, elephants logged all of the teak that earned so much of the early foreign exchange that helped to fuel Thailand's industrialization and modernization.
